2 Common Reasons to Get Dental Extractions

Every person has two sets of teeth – milk teeth and permanent. Milk teeth are also known as primary teeth, which emerge through a baby’s gums during the first couple years of life and fall out during early adolescence. The set of teeth that come afterward are known as permanent teeth.

Ideally, permanent teeth should last you a lifetime. However, sometimes the situation is less than ideal. Following are some reasons that may require you to undergo a dental extraction.

  • Tooth Decay: The most common reason for tooth removal around the world is tooth decay. Patients who avoid seeing the dentist for regular examinations may have undetected decay, causing them to need their teeth removed. However, it usually takes years for tooth decay to progress to the point that it requires removal. Visiting your dentist every six months will help to save you from this issue. However, if you’ve already developed severe tooth decay, a dental extraction maybe your best course of action.
  • Gum Disease: Similar to tooth decay, untreated gum disease can be very destructive for your oral health. When gum disease progresses to an advanced stage, it causes the degeneration of gum tissues, ligaments, and bones that support the teeth. As a result, the teeth become loose. If you don’t get the affected teeth extracted, they will eventually fall out on their own. However, this will cause the other teeth to be affected as well. Getting a dental extraction can prevent the issue from spreading to your entire mouth.

If you feel that you need to get a dental extraction, or have been avoiding your dentist appointment for months or years, visit Coastal Periodontics now.
