What’s The Job of a Periodontist?

A dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease is known as a periodontist. In addition to that, a periodontist may also be an expert in the placement of dental implants and treatments of oral inflammation.

What Sets Periodontists Apart from Dentists?

After completing dental school, dentists who want to become periodontists need to complete three additional years of schooling. During these years of training, they are made familiar with the latest technology and knowledge required for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease. Additionally, they are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.

The Job of a Periodontist

Generally, periodontists treat the more problematic cases of periodontal disease; general dentists are capable of handling milder cases. However, people with a complex medical history or severe gum disease are recommended to consult a periodontist.

Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, including:

  • Scaling and Root planning (infected surface of the root is cleaned)
  • Root surface debridement (damaged tissues are removed)
  • Oral surgery
  • Surgical procedures to remove severe gum problems

What to Expect from Your First Appointment?

If you are visiting a periodontist for the first time, you may be nervous about what’s to come. Don’t be. During the first visit, the periodontist will likely only review your complete medical and dental histories and try to properly determine any dental issues that you may have.

It is important to remain completely honest with your periodontist about your medical history and any medications that you may be taking, as it can be useful for your diagnosis.
