How Long Does Oral Surgery Take to Heal?

Clock

Most people heal within 24-48 hours after oral surgery. But sometimes, oral surgery takes longer to heal. It's normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bleeding. Managing these symptoms is key to a smooth recovery.

If you've had oral surgery to address gum infection around a tooth, following your periodontist's specific aftercare instructions is crucial. Remember, rest and proper oral hygiene are vital during this initial phase.

Healing Timeline for Different Procedures

The healing time associated with oral surgery can vary significantly depending on the oral surgery procedure you receive. For example, a straightforward, simple tooth extraction may heal within only a week. In contrast, healing from more complicated detailed procedures like a tooth implant or (two-stage) bone grafting procedures can last months.

Moreover, the length of time for a healing period may also depend on factors related to your general overall health, the patient's age, adherence to post-surgical care, and other circumstances.

Your periodontist will provide you with an individualized healing time and guide you through the different stages of the healing timelines.

How to Encourage a Smooth Recovery

Adherence to the aftercare practices will be important measures to support a successful, comfortable recovery. During the recovery period, you should refrain from any type of strenuous activity, smoking, or alcohol.

In the first few days, you must eat soft foods until the first stages of healing have begun. As you recover, you should gradually reintroduce solid foods when appropriate.

Continuing to practice excellent oral hygiene is also an important factor for quick healing. But you should be gentle at the surgical site when cleaning teeth.

If you have experienced laser treatment for receding gums or experienced a procedure related to an infection, your periodontist may prescribe a specific oral rinse or medications to facilitate recovery and prevent any complications.
