Dental Implants
Dental implants are a long term and aesthetically appealing solution to replace missing or extracted teeth. Because your other teeth are unaffected by implants and the implant can fuse like your natural teeth, implants are the preferred solution over other alternatives like bridges or dentures.
Coastal Periodontics provides cutting-edge technology with dental implants at our Portsmouth, NH office. As a periodontists, our doctors specialize in treating gum disease, damaged or missing teeth through a variety of periodontal treatments, including the placement of dental implants. Our professional periodontists, Dr. recommend dental implants to replace missing teeth because of the advantages they offer over other treatments.
Process
The dental implant process may be performed over the course of a few months.
- The first part of the process is to gently install the implant into the jaw. This is done by creating a small incision into gum where the implant will be placed. Multiple implants can be placed at once if necessary. In most cases, the gums are sutured.
- You will be allowed between 3-6 months to heal. During this time our periodontist will coordinate treatment with your restorative dentist so that a temporary tooth (teeth) will be in place until you are ready for the permanent restoration. As you heal, your jaw bone will form around the implant in a process called osseointegration.
- After the jaw has formed around the implant an abutment(s) is placed on the implant. The abutment serves as the base for your new tooth. An impression of the abutment is then taken and used to create your permanent restoration. You can return to the office once the restoration(s) is complete.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants are surgically implanted into the gums. Because they become a permanent attachment to the jaw, they provide a stronger and more durable solution than any other treatment for replacing missing teeth. The materials used to create the dental implant can integrate and stimulate the existing jaw bone to prevent bone loss. Dental implants are the only replacement solution capable of stimulating the jaw bone like natural teeth, which is why they have become the preferred replacement choice.
Approximately 69% of adults between the ages of 35 and 44 have lost at least one tooth due to gum disease, decay, or injury. The number of missing teeth continues to climb as people age. By age 74, 26% of adults have lost all of their natural teeth. For more than two decades, dental implants have been the cornerstone as a replacement solution to missing teeth. Although, technology continues to evolve and improve to meet the dental needs, dental implants continue to be the best long term solution for missing teeth.
