Most Common Reasons For Tooth Pain

One of the main complaints heard in dental offices around the world is related to tooth pain! Most people automatically assume that a toothache means a dental cavity, but there are actually many reasons why tooth pain may occur. Fortunately, most of these conditions are avoidable by practicing proper oral hygiene techniques.

Common Causes of Toothaches

Below are a few of the most common causes for tooth pain:

  • Tooth Decay – Aside from dental cavities, tooth decay is one of the most common causes of tooth pain. Once the decay penetrates the tooth enamel, pain will become a factor.
  • Tooth Infection – If decay goes untreated, it will eventually reach the pulp of the tooth. Once this happens, infection becomes a possibility. A tooth infection will be incredibly painful and, because of the inflammation, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where the pain is originating.
  • Gum Disease – Gum disease doesn’t just cause gum pain. If left untreated, gum disease can result in bone loss in the teeth and jaws, causing pain in otherwise healthy teeth.
  • Cracked Tooth Syndrome – Fractures or cracks can sometimes be hidden in teeth. These concealed cracks will cause pain in a tooth that otherwise looks healthy. Cracked tooth syndrome can be a result of traumatic injury to the tooth or an improper bite.

At the end of the day, the best way you can keep dental issues at bay is by practicing good oral hygiene. You should be brushing twice a day for two minutes at a time, and flossing daily. In addition to the daily routine, you should also be visiting the dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and exam.
