Whether you are suffering from a severe toothache or have cracked a tooth, a dental emergency can happen anytime. Keep reading to learn the five dental emergency do’s and don'ts.

  1. Don't Use Anything Sharp to Pick Stuck Objects between Teeth

Many people panic when something sizable gets stuck between their teeth and start searching for a sharp object to pull it out. However, you shouldn't. According to dental experts, using a sharp object like a pin can result in scratching the teeth's surface or cutting your gums. Therefore, it is advised to rinse your mouth and use dental floss to remove the object carefully.

  1. Don't Pull Out a Knocked-Out Tooth by Its Root

When picking up a knocked-out tooth, make sure that you grab it by its biting end or crown and not the roots. This is because the tissues on the root are sensitive and will help reattach your tooth back to its place. In case there's debris or dirt on the knocked-out tooth, use milk to rinse it off.

  1. Do Save Pieces of a Broken or Chipped Tooth

If your tooth has chipped, carefully collect all the broken pieces and rinse them with warm water to get rid of any debris. Keep them in a safe jar and bring the broken pieces to your dental appointment.

  1. Don't Use Aspirin to Relieve Pain

Does your dental emergency involve injuries to the gums, lips, tongue, or any other part of your mouth, and is it bleeding? If yes, never use aspirin for pain relief. Aspirin is an anticoagulant, which will only worsen the bleeding. Instead, hold a cold compress outside your mouth, over the affected area, and check the bleeding every 5 to 10 minutes.

If the pain is unbearable, book an appointment at a dental clinic in Newington immediately.

  1. Do Make a Dental Appointment

No matter what your dental emergency is, call your dentist right away. Even though it might not seem necessary in case of minor emergencies such as food stuck between your teeth, a professional should check the damaged tooth.
