4 Ways How Periodontics Can Save Your Smile

An up-close of a woman smiling

Your smile is your most precious asset, and not having the confidence to smile just because of how your teeth look is saddening. There are multiple ways to fix a smile and ensure that you never have to shy away from it again. One branch of dentistry that can fix this issue is periodontics.

Let’s see how periodontics can improve one’s smile.

1. Improves Receding Gums

Receding gums occur due to many reasons, and brushing your teeth too vigorously and roughly is only one of them. Early signs of gum recession are tooth sensitivity and the appearance of longer than normal teeth. However, periodontics can help stop the receding of one’s gums and give you your smile back.

2. Restores Gums

Gum diseases are pretty common, but one can easily detect them early on if they maintain their oral health. Periodontics can help restore your gums with a deep cleaning, or for more severe cases, with gum surgery, covering the exposed roots.

3. Connective Tissue Grafts

Whatever area is damaged inside your mouth, a periodontist can fix it by taking skin from the roof of your mouth and implant it over the flap of the damaged area while removing the tissue that’s been compromised. The newly grafted tissue placed on the damaged area will heal and develop new healthier gums.

4. Pedicle Graft

Pedicle grafts are performed on people who have problems with their gums, such as receding gums. In this case, the gums are pulled down and sutured efficiently to put them back in place. Donor tissues are also used in many gum restoration procedures, for which a two-week recovery period is recommended.
