DIY Dentistry - Not a Good Choice

Dental Teeth

We should stop calling it ‘Do It Yourself’ – DIY Dentistry. It attaches the connotation of creativity and excitement among users swaying their focus away from its harmful implications. Dentists have been voicing their concern on the DIY issue for years; it’s about time the media pays attention and publicly calls out companies involved in the unethical manufacturing and selling of orthodontic equipment.

Popular DIY dental products and treatments are designed to appeal to the general public and target the youth. Unfortunately, the advent of social media has made information highly accessible and often trending for the wrong reasons. Even though most people will agree that dental treatment is best left to dentists, plenty of patients have tried to solve dental issues at home, and the results were disastrous. While some of us can enjoy easy access to excellent dental care, many of the victims might not be able to do it as easily.

Still Not a Good Choice

In today’s rampant technological world, cheap inventions such as DIY braces or DIY scaling are mostly a hoax, and following internet trends blindly is NOT A GOOD CHOICE. However, the motivation behind trying DIY dental treatments is the same as any other DIY treatment. Users are just looking to experiment. In the case of dental trends, not only do patients get to try something new but save on a potential visit to the dentist, or at least they think they can.

At Coastal Periodontics, we recognize the importance of technology and convenient methods to optimize oral hygiene. Medical intervention and expertise are crucial to innovation in the dental industry, and for any dental advice or procedure, always consult with your dentist.
